Last Thursday night, I had the chance to get a special preview of the New York International Auto Show, a day before it was opened to the public. About 50 other NYC bloggers and I were treated to “Girls Night Out” party that was hosted by the ladies of SheBuysCars.com in the Toyota space of the show. We had the chance to learn more about style, health and organization in our cars while seeing the many new and exclusive cars on the prestigious NY Auto Show Floor (I was drooling over the Alfa Romeos nearby!!)
Of course there was food, drinks, mini chair massages and giveaways for attendees (and even an Über car service credit to cover transportation home!), but I walked away with so much more. I had the chance to interact with a female automotive expert named Audra Fordin, who I had seen on 20/20 and the Today show not too long ago. I was so impressed by her mission to make the world of cars and mechanics more approachable to female customers. Because I am highly automotive illiterate. We chatted extensively at the show about how most women feel like they are getting snowed when they walk into a car repair shop. Through her website and movement, Women Auto Know, Audra empowers ladies to feel confident about their automotive interactions and educates women through workshops and classes offered at her family’s auto shop in Flushing, Queens.
After speaking with Audra, I checked out the style and beauty table presented by two favorite ladies of mine — fashion and beauty experts, Audrey McClelland and Vera Sweeney. We oogled over sparkly necklaces (from AVON?! Who knew?), sherbet nail colors and our love for all things C. Wonder.
Then, I was introduced to a new magazine founded by Dr. Oz. Did you know that one of the top questions Dr. Oz often gets from fans is regarding his diet? Alison Brower, Editor in Chief of Dr. Oz The Good Life Magazine shared that folks seem to always want to know what the famous doc eats. In keeping with the auto theme, Brower told us that Dr. Oz’s favorite road trip snacks are highlighted in the May/June 2014 launch issue.
All in all, it was a fun and festive night, buzzing with activity — many of the automakers hosted private parties in their booths and there was even a gala being held in the Javits Center Atrium to benefit the East Side House Settlement.
The New York International Auto Show at the Javits Center will be in town through April 27, 2014. In addition to 60 new models unveiled at the show, there are a bunch of fun activities like Ride Alongs, simulators, video games, interactive displays and more.
